Undergraduates and Volunteers
The STAR Lab welcomes applications for volunteer research assistants (including undergraduates, medical students, graduate students, and other community members). We study how transdiagnostic risk factors (e.g., anxiety sensitivity, sleep disturbance) for trauma and anxiety-related disorders are associated with underlying biological processes and how they affect the development and maintenance of these disorders. We work to translate this knowledge into effective, technology-based interventions that have the potential to reduce the tremendous burden of suffering for trauma survivors, with a particular focus on sexual assault survivors.
Research assistants from our lab have gone on to full-time research assistant positions, medical school, graduate school in clinical psychology, and more. You will learn how to conduct research in clinical psychology, about trauma, posttraumatic stress, chronic pain, anxiety, and their treatments, use technology such as Qualtrics, Redcap, and more to collect data and design novel interventions, and other valuable skills for your future endeavors, as well as receive mentorship for pursuing a career in medicine, psychology, research, and related areas. Students working in the lab who have demonstrated commitment and strong research potential may work on their own research projects for undergraduate research symposia and ultimately national conferences, as well as collaborate on others’ posters and manuscripts.
STAR requires a minimum GPA of 3.5. Volunteers typically work a minimum of 9 hours per week in the lab and are strongly encouraged to stay in the lab throughout their undergraduate experience at UNLV. We strongly encourage students and volunteers from underrepresented backgrounds in science to apply. We are not currently looking for more volunteers for the Fall semester. Please check back in December/January if you are interested in applying for Spring of 2024.
